Play a room

The house synth, wired to this page.

This is the control-room instrument, laid out the way it sits on the desk. Press a key and it sounds; turn a knob and the tone moves. Nothing plays until you touch it.

Sound starts on your first press and stops when you let go. You can also play it from the computer keyboard: the row A–L is the white keys, W–P the black ones.

What is actually on the floor

The synth above is the only instrument we can put inside a web page. The rest of the locker lives in the live room and is included in every booked hour.

  • Upright pianotuned monthly Kept at the far wall, where the room is longest. Tuned on the first Monday.
  • Drum kit, five pieceshouse kit Two snares, three ride options, and a set of brushes that live in the booth.
  • Valve and solid-state ampsfour heads Two cabinets stay mic’d in the isolation cupboard, so a re-amp takes minutes.
  • Microphone locker22 mics Ribbon, condenser and dynamic, including a matched pair kept for room capture.
  • Modular rackthe hero above The same rack the patch bay at the top of this page is drawn from.
Rooms & equipment

Four rooms, each with one job.

The building was a foundry store, so the walls are thick and the ceiling is high. We kept the shell and treated the inside.

All rooms share one patch bay, so a musician can stand in the live room, the amp can scream in the cupboard, and the engineer still hears both.

Live floor

62 m² · 4.6 m ceiling

The big room. A full band fits with sightlines intact, and the far end still gives a natural tail worth recording.

  • Oak floor, movable screens
  • Drum riser and tie lines
  • Daylight from the north wall

Vocal booth

7 m² · dead by design

Small, quiet, and close-mic’d. Two people fit if one of them is holding a lyric sheet. Line of sight to the desk.

  • Headphone mixes, four sends
  • Tuned trapping to 60 Hz
  • Hanging mic and stand positions

Control room

26 m² · 32-channel desk

Where the mix is finished. Symmetrical layout, one listening position, and a second smaller pair for the reality check.

  • Main and near-field monitoring
  • Valve and transistor preamps
  • Tape machine, kept working

Rehearsal room

24 m² · backline in place

The cheap room, and the one that saves the most money. Run the set here twice and the session upstairs halves.

  • House kit and two combos
  • Four-channel vocal rig
  • Self-serve, key at the desk
A day at the desk

Shifts, broadcasts and the quiet hours.

The studio runs around the clock in blocks. Drag the handle through the day to see what the building is doing at any hour, then pick the block that fits your band.

The strip is the light of one day over Foundry Bank, drawn from fourteen hour keys. The live broadcast goes out from the control room on Thursday evenings.

Engineers

Three people, and one of them is in the room.

Every booked hour comes with an engineer. You will know which one before you arrive, and it will be the same one at the mix.

We do not hand sessions between engineers halfway. If the person who tracked your song is away, the mix waits or the price drops — your call.

We booked one day to track four songs and honestly expected to get two. The kit was already up and mic’d when we walked in at ten, so the first take was on tape before eleven. All four are done.

I record audiobook chapters and I am picky about the booth. This one is dead without being airless, and the headphone mix was right on the first try. I have moved my whole schedule here.

The mix came back with the guitars further forward than I asked, so I used one revision and it was fixed the same evening. The mastering step was the part I did not know I needed — the single finally sits next to everything else.

Questions

The four we are asked every week.

Anything else, call the desk. It is answered by a person between 10:00 and 19:00.
How many hours do we need for one song?
For a rehearsed band, three to four hours gets one song tracked with a couple of usable takes. Add an hour for each extra overdub layer. If the song is not yet rehearsed, book the rehearsal room first — it is the cheapest studio time you will ever buy.
Can we bring our own instruments and engineer?
Own instruments, always — the load-in is at street level. Own engineer, yes, at the same room rate minus $12 an hour; one of ours stays in the building for the patch bay and the coffee.
Do you mix sessions recorded somewhere else?
Yes. Send the session files or consolidated stems at the original sample rate, named by instrument. Mixing is $280 per track with two revisions, and we will tell you before we start if something in the recording cannot be fixed at the mix.
What happens if we run over the booked time?
We keep going if the room is free after you, and the extra is billed at the hourly rate in half-hour steps. If the room is booked, we stop at the hour and the take is saved where we left it.
